Case Study: A father is aggravated when seeing his twelve
year old sun playing compute games. He chose to say "put
the game away and go do your homework". This demand created
tension and did nothing to enhance the father-son relationship.
Therefore, the wrong "Key" was used. What might be the
right "Key" ? The father could ask positive questions:
When are you planning to do your homework?, How much homework
do you have? How much time will it take? Can I be of help?
Key Concept of Communication
Children are not born to cooperate with their parents, it takes
years to teach. It is essential that parents learn how to achieve
cooperation. A dictatorial communication style - stop your fighting,
go to bed, give me a kiss, don't be late for supper, etc. comes
easy but often leads to rebellious behavior. The "Key"
communication concept is simple. My back and front door keys look
alike, both fit into the cylinder but only one key allows me to
achieve my objective - entering my home. I propose that by using
the correct words which symbolically represents the "Key"
you will be successful in developing cooperative relationships
with your children.
